January 13 2024 Gospel Reading and Reflection

1/13/2024 (Saturday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 2:13-17

13 Jesus went out along the sea. All the crowd came to him and he taught them.
14 As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at the customs post. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed Jesus.
15 While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many who followed him.
16 Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 Jesus heard this and said to them, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

1/13/2024 (Saturday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 2:13-17

In the gospel passage above, we witness a story of transformation. Jesus invites Levi, a despised tax collector, to become a disciple, shattering expectations and declaring a love that transcends social boundaries. It is a classic example of how Jesus disrupts societal rigidities with a single act of radical inclusivity.

This act intensifies as Jesus dines with “sinners” like Levi, a potent symbol of acceptance that challenges religious standards. The Pharisees, bound by legalism, question this association, revealing their inability to grasp Jesus’ radical compassion.

Jesus’ response clarifies his mission: to call the broken, not the self-assured, those seeking healing and redemption. This message resonates across time, urging us to examine our own attitudes towards those society deems different. Do we judge or embrace love? Build walls or bridges?

Jesus’ example illuminates the transformative power of unconditional love. Extending grace reflects God’s essence, prioritizing love without condoning sin or compromising values.

Levi’s story exemplifies this transformation. He leaves his old life behind, embarking on a new path bathed in grace, love, and purpose. This portrays the power of encountering Jesus.

As we contemplate this passage, let us ask: How can we embody this radical inclusivity? How can we become agents of grace in a world desperately in need of it?

Jesus’ call to radical love, transcending limitations and offering hope, compels us to extend our hands to the marginalized, the least, and the last. May the story of Jesus and Levi inspire us to live out this love daily.
