November 27 2023 Gospel Reading and Reflection

11/27/2023 (Monday) Today’s gospel reading: Luke 21:1-4

1 When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury
2 and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.
3 He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest;
4 for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

11/27/2023 (Monday) Today’s gospel reflection: Luke 21:1-4

The above gospel passage tells us a brief but powerful story often referred to as the “widow’s mite.” Here, we see Jesus observing how the worshippers donate to the temple. He notes that the widow has given more than the others although she gave only 2 small coins which is all that she has. Obviously, for Jesus, the quality of one’s heart is more important than the quantity of the gift. Jesus saw in the widow’s heart a sincere desire to sacrifice everything for the glory of God.

The widow’s action is a big challenge for some of us who are inclined to show-off. More often than not, we tend to go for grandeur and recognition. However, the divine perspective is different. Jesus appreciates authenticity and humility and abhors superficiality and arrogance.

In the gospel reading, Jesus is challenging us to reflect on our motivation in giving. We are called to support our church or community but let us give our support that is proportionate to our income and with a joyful and humble heart.
