October 27 2023 Gospel Reading and Reflection

10/27/2023 (Friday) Today’s gospel reading: Luke 12:54-59

54 Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does;
55 and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is.
56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
57 “Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
58 If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison.
59 I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

10/27/2023 (Friday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 12:54-59

Modern technology has allowed our scientists and government officials to predict exactly what the weather looks like tomorrow and beyond. Yet, even as the world has progressed scientifically and economically, there is so much more to be desired with regards to moral and spiritual development. Many people especially the religious leaders during the time of Jesus failed miserably to recognize the signs of the times. Today, Jesus speaks to us through the gospel above that we better watch out for the coming judgment. Jesus was the greatest sign and those who saw Him, listened to Him, and walked with Him should have repented and reconciled with one another. Yet Jesus chastised them for their blindness and obstinacy.

Jesus is still the greatest sign and nothing and no one else is a better sign. We who are alive today must listen to His call for reconciliation, forgiveness, and repentance. As the world is wrecked with violence here and there and people are still filled with hatred, greed, and desire for revenge, the message of the gospel that we settle matters quickly is very much applicable.

Jesus, the righteous judge, is coming back. Yet even as we wait for His coming, let us be prepared and let repentance and reconciliation be an important part of our preparation.
