Australian Historical Events in June

Australian Historical Events is a daily guide to the important events that shaped Australia to what it is today. It is a compilation of significant events for the month of June including the birth and death of famous Australians as well as laws promulgated by authorities. The list is constantly updated to incorporate the most recent events.

1 1959 The Immigration Restriction Act 1901 which formed the basis of the White Australia policy was repealed.
2 1909 Alfred Deakin takes oath for his third term as prime minister of Australia.
4 1824 The Hobart Town Gazette was published by Andrew Bent, the first time a newspaper had been published in Australia without government permission.
4 1829 Perth was established as a settlement.
4 1887 The Working Men’s College of Melbourne (now Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) was opened.
6 1856 New South Wales achieved responsible government with the introduction of a bicameral parliament comprising a directly elected Legislative Assembly and a nominated Legislative Council.
6 1888 The British Crown annexed Christmas Island after it was found that the island was rich in natural resources.
8 1942 The Japanese submarine I-21 briefly shelled Newcastle City in New South Wales during the onset of World War II.
8 2007 The Hunter and Central Coast regions were battered by the worst series of storms to hit New South Wales in 30 years resulting in extensive flooding and nine deaths.
10 1838 In the Myall Creek massacre, at least twenty-eight unarmed Indigenous Australians were killed by twelve colonists at the Myall Creek near the Gwydir River, in northern New South Wales.
11 1886 Death: James Alipius Goold, the first Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne.
14 1893 Patrick Hannan discovered gold which set off a major gold rush in Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. The area became known as The Golden Mile, the richest square mile in the world.
21 2021 The International Olympic Committee selected and announced at its session in Lausanne, Switzerland that Brisbane in Queensland, Australia won the winning bid for 2032 Summer Games.
25 1847 Melbourne was declared a city by virtue of a Letters patent of Queen Victoria.
28 2007 The Sydney Opera House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
27 1911 The Royal Military College, Duntroon, also known simply as Duntroon, was founded as the Australian Army’s officer training establishment.
29 1859 James Quinn was installed as the first bishop of the Diocese of Brisbane in the state of Queensland.
29 2001 Peter John Hollingworth begins his term as the 23rd governor-general of Australia.
