The town of San Jose de Buenavista was formally created as a unified municipality in 1904 with Martin Iglesias as the first presidente municipal.

San Jose de Buenavista is an agricultural town where rice, corn and fish are the major products. As the capital of the province however, some commercial and financial establishments operate to serve mostly government officials and employees as well as visitors from other towns.
