History of Ipil

The town of Ipil was formerly a barrio of Kabasalan. On July 26, 1949, it was elevated as a separate municipality. When the province of Zamboanga Sibugay was created on February 24, 2001, Ipil was selected as the capital.

On the morning of April 3, 1995, Ipil was attacked by approximately 200 heavily armed Abu Sayyaf militants. More than 30 hostages were taken, 11 were killed and billions of pesos were lost due to lootings and the burning of the town center.

Economy of Ipil

Ipil is an agricultural town where rice, corn, coconut, fish and seaweed are the major products. Being the capital of the province, it is the undisputed commercial and financial center.
