Polillo is a 3rd class coastal municipality of Quezon Province in Region IV-A, Philippines.

Location –> Southern part of Polillo Island on the eastern coast of Luzon (See map below). It bounded on the south and west by Lamon Bay. It is situated 24 kilometres (15 mi) east of the municipality of Infanta and 27 kilometres (17 mi) east of the municipality of Real.

History of Polillo Municipality

Long before the coming of the Spaniards, Polillo Island was already inhabited by people who had trade relations with the Chinese. In 1567, the Spanish conqueror Juan de Salcedo set foot in Polillo with Padre Morga who took note that the island was named Pu Li Lu which according to him was a Chinese name meaning beautiful. He also noticed that the islanders had a government called Balangay and that the people lived in nipa huts. In 1571, the Spaniards took control of the island with Friar Domingo as the parish priest who initiated the building of a church. He also started the planting of sugarcane and the production of molasses. It was on March 18, 1587 that Polillo was formally organized as a pueblo.

On July 31, 2019, Congressman Mark Enverga file House Bill 2680 to declare Polillo Group of islands a tourism zone.

Economy of Polillo

The economy of Polillo is based on farming and fishing. Coconut and fish are the main products. In the town center are located grocery stores and other shops that cater to the needs of the population not only of Polillo municipality but also of Burdeos and Panukulan. Also, it is the home of the main port of the whole island.

Recently, tourism became a large contributor to the local government revenue especially with the multi-million development of Balesin Island into a world-class resort.
