History
The municipality of Pio Duran was named after Pio Duran, a brilliant Bicolano lawyer who was born in nearby Guinobatan town. It was created out of several barrios of Guinobatan, Jovellar and Ligao City by virtue of Republic Act 3817 which was approved by President Diosdado Macapagal on June 22, 1963.
In 1970, the town had a population of 26,443 which grew to 46,693 in 2015.
Economy
Pio Duran is an agricultural and trading municipality. Coconut, rice and fish are the main products.
The town is home to a seaport, the main gateway to Masbate Province. It is also the gateway to Donsol, a popular tourist destination in Sorsogon Province.
