History
Through the efforts of Don Josef Bersosa, the town of San Fernando was founded on August 16, 1754 out of the barrios from Bacolor and Mexico with Don Vidal de Arrozal its first gobernadorcillo (mayor).
As early as 1896, San Fernando was in a state of war since Pampanga became one of the earliest provinces that revolted against Spanish authorities. In 1898, a municipal revolutionary government was established with Don Antonio Consunji as president of the town. When the Americans occupied the area, they installed Enrique Kerr as mayor.
On August 15, 1904, the provincial capitol was moved from Bacolor to San Fernando. The 1930s saw the organization of the local Communist Party led by Jose Abad Santos. During the war, San Fernando was one of the stop-over of the so-called Death March where thousands of Filipino and American prisoners of war died of hunger, diseases and torture from the Japanese Forces.
On February 4, 2001, San Fernando became the 99th city of the Philippines following the ratification of Republic Act 8990. Rey Aquino was the city’s first mayor.
Economy, Business and Investment
San Fernando used to be one of the centers of sugar production in the country. However, due to rapid urbanization, sugar lands gave way to residential and commercial areas and the sugar central ceased operations.
Today, San Fernando is bustling capital city with several malls and big businesses operate in the city. Large manufacturing plants include the San Miguel food and beverage manufacturing complex, Coca-cola bottling, and Universal Robina. The city is home to meat processing plants like the famous Mekeni, Pampanga’s Best and Tita’s meat products. Lantern-making is a well-known cottage industry in the city. Other industries include garment-making and ceramics.
