Surigao Del Sur History

During the Spanish period, the area covered by Surigao Del Sur was part of the “Distrito De Surigao” which was created in 1860. On June 19, 1960, Surigao Del Sur was created with the enactment of Republic Act 2786 which split the historical Surigao Province into two: del Norte and del Sur. The following year, Vicente L. Pimentel, Sr. was elected as the first congressman of the independent Surigao del Sur.

Economy of Surigao Del Sur Province

Surigao Del Sur is primarily an agricultural province where rice, corn, coconut, abaca, and fish are the main products. with its many natural attractions, tourism is fast becoming an important industry especially in the city of Bislig and the town of Hinatuan.
