Siquijor Province History

Siquijor has been settled before the coming of the Spaniards. In 1783, the parish of Siquijor was established and administered fro Cebu. Later, it became a sub-province of Negros Oriental.

On September 17, 1971, Siquijor was created as a province by RA 6396 with Larena as the capital. In 1975, the capital was moved to the town of Siquijor.

Economy of Siquijor

Majority of the people in the island province of Siquijor are engaged either in farming or in fishing. Trading is mostly done in the poblacion (town center) of each municipality. The traders get most of their supplies from Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.

Tourism is yet to be developed in the province.
