The Philippines just added a fourth Miss Universe title. Her representative, Catriona Gray, was crowned as Miss Universe 2018 during the coronation night (morning in Thailand) today, December 17. She bested other 93 contestants including Miss South Africa who won first runner-up and Miss Venezuela who placed second runner-up. With her win, Gray joins three other Filipina beauties who won the title: Gloria Diaz in 1969, Margie Moran in 1973, and more recently Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach in 2015.
In the first question and answer portion, Miss Philippines said she favored legalization of marijuana. “I’m for it being used for medical use, but not so for recreational use. Because I think if people will argue then what about alcohol and cigarettes? Everything is good but in moderation?”
In the finals, she responded to the question “What is the most important lesson you’ve learned and how will you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?” by saying
“I work a lot in the slums of Tondo, Manila and the life there is poor and very sad. And I’ve always taught to myself to look for the beauty of it and look in the beauty of the faces of the children and to be grateful. And I will bring this aspect as a Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson. And this I think if I can teach people to be grateful, we can have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster and children will have smile on their faces.”
Catriona, 24 years old, is not new to international beauty competitions. In 2016, she was placed at the top 5 in the Miss World pageant held in Maryland, USA.
